Fall Tree printing

I got this idea from Frugal Family Fun blog (love it!). I drew a bare tree on a piece of blue card stock with a marker and gave it to Kitten along with yellow, red and orange paints and a cork.

I really love the outcome (although I had to finish it a little). For some reason she thought that she needs to push as hard as possible at the cork (may be because we were using a paper punch not long before that) and it was slipping and smearing, so I corrected her several times, after which she lost interest :( I need to remember to interfere less and not to be such a control freak.

  1. Very nice! Looks like it's apples on there too!
If you don't try to show her, is she gonna figure out how to properly use ALL of the tools though? Don't be so hard on yourself :)

  2. She is just at that stage when I cannot tell her how to do stuff AT ALL, she gets really mad and starts hitting and throwing stuff, I think I just need to back off for a while...

  4. Umm, if you just back off every time she throws a hissy fit, you will get a very spoiled child ;) Maybe you could just sit next to her with another cork and do it right yourself, while describing what you are doing (e.g. "I am pressing very lightly, so the cork doesn't slip out of my fingers") and talking to yourself about how nice and fun it is when the cork is not acting out (passive-aggressive much? :)) ) It often works for the little ones without making them feel like they are screwing up, and it's still THEIR choice to follow your example. We often suggested this to our parents at the Child Study Center, but I am sure you've read about it yourself. Very nice tree by the way! And you claim that you can't draw! And Kitten did very well too, I can't really tell which ones got smudged vs. are on each other on purpose.

  5. I did demonstrate what to do first. If I join in on the fun she usually either wants to take all the tools for herself or (more commonly) just watches me and asks me to draw stuff. But I will try it your way next time. At the moment I stopped most of our art activities because she is prejudiced from a couple of times when things did not go smoothly between us. I am letting her forget that and then will try more calmly.
